Sonskyn Service Centre, situated at Museum Park, is a place where 45 unprivileged older people from Pretoria, living outside homes for the aged, meet on a regular basis. At Sonskyn the older persons feel part of a family, they can temporary forget about their day to day problems and enjoy being with fellow older persons. Some of the members are in their mid seventies and eighties whilst the oldest is a lady of 90.
While these older persons attend the meetings at Sonskyn Service Centre they are being introduced to cultural-, spiritual-, medical- and social information to empower them to live their lives with dignity and self-respect. The 35 “Bokke”, so called because they live in two blocks of flats named Blesbok and Bosbok, are treated as a satellite service centre of Sonskyn. They are being treated to the same empowerment programmes than the Sonskyn members.
Social Work services are being utilized to handle specialized personal and social problems of these people but most of the older people only has a longing to be in touch with other older people to share in a conversation of the past or just to be amongst people who understands the way older people think, reason and react.
We are open Wednesdays to Fridays from 09:00 to 13:00. Contact Mari on 084 920 5557 for more information.
